"With vegetables you cannot sell, you can buy a good laugh." With that proposition to the people of Southwest Virginia during the Great Depression came the name of the Barter Theatre, one of the longest running professional theatres in the nation.
Thespians and storytellers go hand in hand but you can judge the difference yourself after attending a performance at the Barter Theatre and a storytelling session in Historic Jonesborough, the birthplace of storytelling festivals.
Continuing through this rural landscape we stumble upon the largest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia in Mount Airy and you may find yourself reminiscing about a simpler time when we tour the Andy Griffith Home. Complete the experience with a Pork Chop Sandwich at "Snappy Lunch" diner, where in the seventh episode Andy suggested Barney take Miss Rosemary to eat there after a movie.
Of course actors and storytellers aren't the only performers Appalachia has to offer. The Birthplace of County Music Museum in Bristol, Tennessee features exhibits, shows and educational programs and has been increasingly respected since its announcement as an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC in 2000.
