Day 1 - (Monday, May 12) - We begin our 14-day trip with a flight from Charleston, SC to Rapid City, SD. Once in South Dakota, we will visit Mount Rushmore, the epic sculpture that features the faces of four exalted American presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. These 60-foot high faces, 500 feet up, look out over a setting of pine, spruce, birch, and aspen in the clear western air. Mount Rushmore is a powerful symbol of American democracy! We will stay overnight in Rapid City.
Day 2 - (Tuesday, May 13) - Today we will travel to Cody, WY to visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. The Buffalo Bill Historical Center is widely regarded as America's finest Western museum and is located on the doorstep of Yellowstone National Park's East Gate. The Historical Center includes 5 museums - The Buffalo Bill Museum, which seeks to interpret the "Buffalo Bill's" story in the context of the history and myth of the American West; The Whitney Gallery of Western Art, which presents an outstanding collection of masterworks of the American West; The Plains Indian Museum, which features one of the country's largest and finest collections of Plains Indian art and artifacts; The Cody Firearms Museum, which contains the world's most comprehensive assemblage of American arms, as well as European arms dating to the 16th century; and The Draper Museum of Natural History, which integrates the humanities with natural sciences to interpret the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and adjacent intermountain basins. Dinner will be included tonight.
Day 3 - (Wednesday, May 14) - We will travel through Yellowstone National Park, the first national park to be established. Located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, Yellowstone National Park is home to a large variety of wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, bison, and elk. Preserved within Yellowstone National Park is the world-famous Old Faithful - a fountain of steam that rises more than 60 feet in the air - and a collection of the world's most extraordinary geysers and hot springs. We will end a delightful day of sightseeing with an overnight stay in West Yellowstone, Montana, the western gateway of Yellowstone National Park.
Day 4 - (Thursday, May 15) - Today we will visit the Grand Tetons, which tower more than a mile above the valley of Jackson Hole to 13,770 feet. Twelve Teton peaks reach above 12,000 feet and support a dozen mountain glaciers. We will enjoy a spectacular landscape rich with majestic mountains, pristine lakes and extraordinary wildlife. While visiting the Grand Tetons, we will see the rustic log Chapel of Transfiguration which sits on a rise just within the southern entrance of Grand Teton National Park. A large window behind its altar frames the magnificent beauty of these rugged mountains. We will be entertained this evening with dinner and a Western show before staying overnight in Jackson Hole, WY.
Day 5 - (Friday, May 16) - We will travel today to Salt Lake City, UT and visit Temple Square. This beautifully landscaped 10-acre plot of ground in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City is one of Utah's most visited attractions. Centerpiece of the Square is the 6-spired granite Salt Lake Temple, and adjacent to this imposing edifice is the domed Tabernacle. The Salt Lake Temple stands as a testament to the faith and devotion of the pioneers who settled in the valley and sacrificed both time and material goods to the building of the Temple. The Tabernacle is home of the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the great Tabernacle Organ, which contains 11,623 pipes making it one of the largest and richest sounding organs in the world. After visiting these majestic attractions, we will stay overnight in Salt Lake City.
Day 6 - (Saturday, May 17) - Today we travel to Bryce Canyon National Park, truly one of the most spectacular scenic wonders of the world. The formations within Bryce Canyon, called Hoodoos, are the creation of wind and water erosion over eons of time. Iron oxidizing within the rock causes the natural orange and red hues that color these formations. Bryce Canyon is one of the most scenically diverse places in the world!
Day 7 - (Sunday, May 18) - Zion National Park is our attraction for today. We will enjoy the red and white sandstone cliffs of Zion Canyon. Zion Canyon features soaring towers and monoliths that suggest a quiet grandeur. In sheer magnitude and color, Zion is very likely one of the most awe-inspiring national parks in the world. We will leave nature's beauty behind for the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas for our overnight stay. Probably the most famous stretch of road in the world, Las Vegas' 4 miles of neon-lit resorts and around-the-clock action is like nowhere else on earth!
Day 8 - (Monday, May 19) - Today we will visit one of Las Vegas' main sightseeing attractions, the magnificent Hoover Dam. Hoover Dam is among the greatest modern engineering projects. At the peak of construction at Hoover Dam 5,218 people would be working on the Dam at one time. Hoover Dam is 726.4 feet in height; it is 660 feet thick at the base and contains 4,360,000 cubic yards of concrete. What an exciting day we'll have seeing the Hoover Dam before traveling on to the Grand Canyon for our overnight stay.
Day 9 - (Tuesday, May 20) - Today will be one of the highlights of our tour as we spend the entire day at the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is a very colorful, steep-sided gorge, carved by the Colorado River in the U.S. state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park - one of the first national parks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of conservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery. Today we will join the more than 5 million visitors that the Grand Canyon receives each year!
Day 10 - (Wednesday, May 21) - We will see an ever-changing landscape that offers spectacular views that only Mother Nature can create as we visit the Painted Desert today. The Painted Desert covers an area of 93,533 acres that stretches southeast from the Grand Canyon to the Petrified Forest National Park. The desert derives its name from the multi-hued badlands of the Chinle Formation rocks that cover the park. We will then continue on the Colorado's magnificent Mesa Verde National Park. Mesa Verde, Spanish for green table, offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, from A.D. 600 to A.D. 1300. Today, the park protects over 4,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States. We will stay overnight in Southwest Colorado.
Day 11 - (Thursday, May 22) - Today, relive the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a spectacular journey on board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The railroad arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881 and construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882 the tracks to Silverton were completed and the historic train has been in continuous operation for 126 years. At the end of an eventful day, we will stay overnight in Montrose, CO.
Day 12 - (Friday, May 23) - Enjoy Colorado's Natural Wonder as we visit the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park today - a place where looking down is even more breathtaking than looking up and a place that brings together the scenic beauty of the Grand Canyon and the human achievement of the Golden Gate Bridge. Royal Gorge Bridge and Park is the most visited theme park and wildlife park in the Pikes Peak Region. This historical landmark features scenic beauty and natural attractions as well as the world's highest Suspension Bridge, world's longest single-span Aerial Tram, world's steepest Incline Railway and the newest thrill ride, the world's highest Skycoaster. The Royal Gorge Bridge is the highest suspension bridge in the world and an unforgettable quarter-mile journey through the clouds. Tonight we will be staying overnight in Colorado Springs before our final day of sightseeing.
Day 13 - (Saturday, May 24) - On our last day of sightseeing, we will visit Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods. Pikes Peak forms a stunning backdrop for Colorado Springs and the Garden of the Gods and is the most visited mountain in North America. The view from the top of Colorado's most famous mountain is truly outstanding. This evening we will enjoy dinner and a show at The Flying W Ranch, a working mountain cattle ranch that has specialized in western food and entertainment since 1953. We will experience picturesque natural surroundings, an authentic Western Village and a mighty tasty Chuckwagon Supper. Following our meal, the Flying W Wranglers will top the evening off with their outstanding Western Stage Show.
Day 14 - (Sunday, May 25) - Today, we will fly from Denver to Charleston, taking with us many lasting memories of the beauty of God's creation!
