Outer Banks, North Carolina
In 1908, the Wright brothers sent their aircraft soaring down the giant sand dunes at Kill Devil Hill just a few miles south of Kitty Hawk. Today, students can walk the expansive beachfront and discover tales of pirates, the Lost Colony of 1587, and even the famed Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
Fort Raleigh
Fort Raleigh preserves the location of Roanoke colony, the first English colony in North America in 1587. Referred to as the “Lost Colony,” few clues abound as to what happened to its settlers after their landing.
Roanoke Island Festival Park
Located on Roanoke Island, visitors can view Elizabeth II, a 16th-century replica sailing ship, living history demonstrations, as well as a museum and hands-on exhibits.
Wright Brothers National Memorial
Located in Kill Devil Hill, NC, the Wright Brothers National memorial features a 60 foot granite monument dedicated to the Wright brothers, as well as a museum with models and actual tools. A reconstructed wind tunnel is also on display.
Museum of First Flight
In the museum, visitors can see a replica of the 1902 glider used by the Wright Brothers. They can also see a 1903 flying machine, as well as an original engine block. Educational exhibits on flight are also on display.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
At 200 feet, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the 23rd tallest traditional lighthouse in the world. Located on the Outer Banks of NC, visitors can climb to the top of the light for breathtaking views of the beach and Atlantic Ocean.
Bodie Island Lighthouse
Standing 156 feet tall, Bodie Island Lighthouse overlooks Roanoke Sound. Though not currently climbable by the public, the lighthouse is nonetheless a picturesque stop along the NC Outer Banks.
Ocracoke & Cedar Island Ferry Ride
These quaint, quiet islands lay off the coast of NC and offer a relaxing trip for any visitor. A ferry ride connects the island to the mainland and helps maintain the nostalgia of the islands.
