HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY Georgia Sea Turtle Center!

Another GNT student field trip a success!  Students are visiting the Georgia Sea Turtle Center where they are having a "wonderful day!' June 2017 commemorates the Georgia Sea Turtle Center’s 10th year in operation and they are hosting a party free to the public on Saturday, June 10: 2-5 p.m.  Center admission will be waived from 2-5pm, there will be a community birthday card to sign, cupcakes and the center will be“decorated,” showcasing ways you can reduce plastics. The afternoon will include creature features, live music, and a special “Dunk the Doc” fundraiser.

Student travel helps build self-esteem, independence, tolerance and cultural awareness, while breaking down barriers to a child’s personal, educational and social development. Patterns and habits embraced when traveling at an early age are known to influence future.  I am interested in a field trip!

According to The SYTA (Student Youth Travel Association) in their recent study of the Student Travel market, research confirmed the importance of travel in the life of a child.  Most importantly, teachers state that student travel prompts a transformation, through which students grow their ambitions to know, learn and explore.  In addition to improved intellectual motivation and curiosity, teachers highlight increased individual self-esteem, better self-expression, teamwork skills and adaptability. After participating in a trip, students wish to travel more, which naturally starts a new cycle of learning opportunities as a part of their future tours.  Finally, familiarization with new cultures increases young peoples’ tolerance and respectfulness.  When experienced at an early

Amazing Grace: The Musical Debuts in Washington!

 WASHINGTON D.C. – As the first stop on its upcoming national tour, AMAZING GRACE, the inspirational Broadway musical will be the first production – of any kind – to christen the new, state-of-the-art World Stage Theater at Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C. Running Down the Hill

Tradition at Clemson University isn't something that is taken lightly. From tiger rag, to singing the alma mater, to rubbing the rock Clemson has traditions that will last a life time. The most exciting 25 seconds of college football is a tradition which started out of convenience in the beginning, but now has turned into something bigger. Since 1942 the football team has been running down the hill to enter Death Valley at the start of each game. The dressing room for the football players was at the Fike Field House, which was closes to the east end zone. Because of the location it made more sense for the players to run down the hill to get into the stadium. For some people rubbing a rock and running down a hill seems insignificant, but to the Clemson Tigers it's a tradition.

Disney's Pandora: The World of Avatar

SUMMER of 2017, Disney Parks and Resorts, will go live with a new expansion to Disney's Animal Kingdom: Pandora—The World of Avatar.

In collaboration with filmmaker James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment, Disney is bringing the mythical world of Pandora to life. The expansion will feature two new signature attractions for guests to explore the world of Pandora. Guests could fly over the jungles of Pandora on a Mountain Banshee on Avatar Flight of Passage, or enjoy a family-friendly boat ride through the bioluminescent forests on Na'vi River Journey.

Savannah Tour of Gullah Culture

Savannah is known for its eclectic heritage and Southern charm. From its antebellum mansions and mossy, tree-lined streets to the fountains and statures scattered throughout the city, the city is filled with attractions and historical hotspots.

The Pin Point Heritage Museum offers informational and interactive programs designed to capture Gullah/Geechee culture firsthand. Located in an old oyster and crab factory on the banks of the Moon River, the museum tells the story of an African -American community that thrived in isolation for nearly 100 years and was founded by first generation freedmen. In addition, some of the museum exhibits explore the lives of former residents such as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Another great way to learn about Gullah culture in Savannah is to take the Gullah/Geeche tour offered by Day Clean Journeys. The name Day Clean itself is a Gullah phrase meaning “new day” or “dawn.” Led by tour guide and historian Amir Jamal Toure, the two-hour tour takes guests to several spots around Savannah, including the First African Baptist Church, one of the first black churches in North America and a stop on the Underground Railroad, and Factors Walk, an area near River Street that once was the center of the city’s slave trade. The tour also visits the Garden of Eden restaurant, which specializes in soul food and Southern fare.

QT Luong’s Treasured Lands

QT Luong, the 1st to photograph all 59 US National Parks, shows us how to capture some of America's greatest treasures in his book Treasured Lands: A Photographic Odyssey Through America's National Parks. In an article by Kurt Repanshek on September 25th, 2016, NationalParksTraveler.com, Repanshek showcases the book and QT Luong photographic journey. National parks are far from one-dimensional. They hold history, beauty, and the natural world in all the nooks and crannies of their landscapes. Old-growth forests, canyons that streams and rivers have gnawed into the earth, colorful coral reefs, expansive lakes, and some of the first vestiges of human encounters with nature all are contained within the parks. This great diversity and intersections of nature are what draws QT Luong again and again into the National Park System with his cameras.

It was 2002 when the landscape photographer first completed a journey through all of the 58 "national parks" that existed at the time, an achievement no other large format photographer could claim. This feat was recognized by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan in their landmark documentary, The National Parks: America's Best Idea. With parks scattered across half the globe, from National Park of American Samoa in the Pacific to Gates of Arctic National Park and Preserve near the roof of Alaska and Virgin Islands National Park in the Caribbean, it would have been easy, and far less expensive, for Luong to celebrate the National Park Service Centennial this year with a new book of photographs pulled from his archives from his earlier adventures through the park system.  Read more

September 24, 2016,  GRAND OPENING Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the only national museum devoted exclusively to African American culture, will open it's doors! Just on our way home from D.C., we experienced the planning of what is said to be one of the most elaborate museum openings in Smithsonian history. From tents, to chairs, port-a-johns and projectors, they have been setting up for weeks in preparation for this historic event.

Chattanooga's Riverpark Extension

A three mile, $16 million expansion of the Tennessee Riverpark along the Tennessee River from downtown to the city's Southside near the foot of Lookout Mountain was dedicated mid-August.  Since opening, Chattanooga’s linear park has been recognized as one of the best in the nation. CNN Travel named the Riverpark among the “World’s 10 Best City Running Trails”.

Unlike the openness of the first 10 miles, which leads trekkers through wetlands and wooded areas, the newest tract traverses a big chunk of the city’s industrial heritage.  HIghlights include:

With long hours in transit, cramped cabins and drastic temperature changes, dressing for travel isn't always easy. Here are some travel tools that will help keep you fashionable throughout your trip!

Layers

Pashminas, shawls, wraps, cardigans, sweatshirts, vests, and light jackets are perfect. You can even fold or roll soft items, like cotton jackets, and use them as makeshift pillows during flight. www.Cabionline.com is a great resource for versatile layers that look great on and off the plane.

Seasonless & Breathable Fabrics

According to Neiman Marcus fashion director Ken Downing, "We're seeing designers address lighter-weight and transitional-weight fabrics, so that they're seasonless," he says, citing tropical wool and double-face cashmere. Downing continues. "Knit is a traveler's best friend. It's so easy. A jersey dress packs well because it doesn't wrinkle. And with a change of accessories, you can go to dinner and be very polished." Downing suggests trying jersey knits from designers like Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg and Stella McCartney.

Comfortable Shoes

Pack shoes you've already worn and know to be comfortable, for standing and sitting for long periods of time and for walking miles upon miles. For air travel, you'll want to wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off when passing through airport security.  We recommend metro city style sneakers from New Balance, Addidas and Nike. Toms (for men and women), and higher-end Tieks (for women) are other really great alternatives.

Glasses

If you typically wear contacts, you might want to wear your glasses instead and pack a travel size contact solution and contact case for a quick change...especially on long flights.  Because air in plane cabins is dry—usually around 10 to 20 percent humidity—contacts become uncomfortable to wear if your eyes dry out in the cabin.
